I live between cultures, a fact I both cherish and complain about. Zawsze gdzieś, a jakby trochę nigdzie. My home is in Warsaw; it’s where it all started. Today, my goal is to research the theory of troska in all its forms. I use the Polish word troska in every language I write in, because Polish is my mother tongue and its complexity determines how I understand the concept. It’s fascinating. Troska is a value that has been systematically devalued and excluded from the pantheon of values by patriarchal society and culture. Still, it was embedded in our souls hundreds of thousands of years ago, and it will protect our communities forever. Even so, outbursts of fascism – including the end-times fascism now on the rise – claim millions of lives, destroy our planet and turn this beautiful world into a place of despair. Fascism will never win, but it must be stopped to protect what matters most: our joyful, precious time on Earth and the people we share it with.

Zawsze gdzieś, a jakby trochę nigdzie. To fascynujące. A jednak została wpisana w nasze dusze setki tysięcy lat temu i zawsze będzie chronić nasze wspólnoty. Mimo to wybuchy faszyzmu – w tym rosnącego dziś w siłę faszyzmu czasów ostatecznych – odbierają życie milionom ludzi, niszczą naszą planetę i zamieniają ten piękny świat w miejsce rozpaczy. Faszyzm nigdy nie wygra, ale trzeba go powstrzymać, by chronić to, co najważniejsze: nasz radosny, cenny czas na Ziemi i ludzi, z którymi go dzielimy.

I live between cultures, a fact I both cherish and complain about. Always somewhere, and yet somehow a little nowhere. My home is in Warsaw; it’s where it all started. Today, my goal is to research the theory of troska in all its forms.

I am still studying.

Transcription and translation

A friend and I transcribed the diary of Hanna Górska-Kwaśniewska, a soldier of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) who fought in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and later became a prisoner of war, and I translated it into English at the request of her family in the United States.

Catalan independence referendum

Neutral observer

On 1 October 2017, I served as a neutral observer at the Pau Claris High School in Barcelona during the Catalan independence referendum. I documented the violent behaviour of the Spanish police. The footage was later featured in the documentary La gent de l’escala (The People from the Stairs) by Francesc Escribano and Jordi Fusté for TV3, and in the docuseries Las vidas de Fèlix (All the Lives of Fèlix), produced for HBO by Minoria Absoluta.
